Brunswick, ME – Still Point Art Gallery, a virtual fine art gallery, invites submissions from artists for its upcoming exhibition: American Portraits – Diversity in Our Land. The purpose of this exhibition is to celebrate diversity through the artistic genre of portraiture. Artists are encouraged to think about diversity in its broadest sense – from ethnicity, race, and religion to occupation, lifestyle, and regional customs. The deadline for submissions is April 19, 2010. Online exhibition dates are May 5 to August 10, 2010. Further information and entry rules may be found on the gallery’s website:  http://www.stillpointartgallery.com/. To add to the celebratory nature of this exhibition, the gallery is exploring ways to turn this show into public art.

Christine Cote, owner and director of Still Point Art Gallery, came up with the idea for this exhibition when she was making plans for the gallery’s schedule of 2010 exhibitions. “I participated in a photography workshop last summer with someone who primarily took photos of people in street scenes. I became amazed by what these images had to say individually and as a collection. The idea of drawing together lots of images that represent all of the ways that people differ in our country just came to me. But then I became quite excited by what that would say as a collection…as an exhibition.” Cote went on to say that the idea for turning this show in some way into public art was a natural next step. She thinks this will be an exhibition that should be broadly displayed. Cote plans to help artists get their pieces displayed in local libraries, town halls, or community centers.  She is also working to get links to the exhibition on relevant websites. Additional ideas are welcome and may be emailed to the gallery.
