On February 14th, 2010, Doritos Canada launched a contest, where it invited the general public to create a video featuring Doritos new Mystery flavor, upload it onto YouTube and make it go viral. The Prize Money for the most-watched video: $250,000. Considering the amount of publicity that the contest, as well as the Doritos brand has gotten - most of the videos created aren't very good. In fact, they are down-right dreadful. It's quite evident that people will do anything to win the $250K. We've seen everything from a half-naked woman being covered in tortilla chips, to cheap rip-off imitations of other worthy commercials like the iPad and AXE deodorant. Youtube "celebrities"
From the beginning, the contest has been plagued with hacks, fake proxies, and automated bots - anything to get more views. However, one thing that most contestants are forgetting, is THE CONTENT and what it means to the Doritos Brand, if they were to broadcast their videos on TV.
However, one particular contestant is going the extra distance to create a brand mascot for Doritos. A talented Toronto based animator, and creative maven by the name of Denny Kurien, has created a stick-figure character with a pair of shades, and calls him "Zesto". In his own words, "Zesto is Fido Dido from the late 80s, but with balls!". His first video submission portrayed Zesto as a daring thrill-seeking Indiana Jones character, who goes all the way to Egypt to recover the sacred Doritos pack, while dodging tortilla boulders and crocodiles with tortilla-sharp teeth:
