When “Red.es”, an entity of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade responsible for driving the information society in Spain, called for innovative technology solutions to advance the country’s education system, virtual reality company Ingevideo came up with a project plan that spiked the interest of government officials. The project had to be unique and not only technically feasible but also within budget at times of worldwide economic crisis.
Teaming up with technology leaders in the visual simulation industry such as WorldViz, Hewlett Packard, Christie Digital, and RealD, Ingevideo proposed to supply Spanish universities with advanced immersive multi-wall stereo projection systems allowing students from interdisciplinary backgrounds to utilize virtual reality technology for their studies. For this idea and its successful realization, Ingevideo was chosen by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce as the top innovative Spanish company to receive the award and implement the most advanced VR systems at Spanish Universities.
Miguel Motos, Director VR & Simulation at Ingevideo comments: “With my fifteen years of experience in the visual simulation market, it was clear to me that I needed to team up with a leader in VR software, but also with a company that could understand the local culture and was open to collaborate and be open to a win-win relationship. That company is WorldViz with its outstanding products, and even more importantly, with the right type of engineers who did an excellent job in analyzing the customer requirements and looking into the future of 3D.”
Upon project approval, the universities of Alicante, Cadiz, Santiago de Compostela, and Burgos received cutting-edge VR systems including WorldViz Vizard VR software, 3chip digital active stereo projectors, active 3D glasses, optical motion tracking systems, and high-end graphics workstations. WorldViz engineers flew out to each site in Spain and installed the Vizard VR software platform that seamlessly integrates all hardware components into one system. At eleven other universities in Spain, Ingevideo also installed optical tracking systems to be used for motion capture and as a first step for future VR development. The universities use their new visualization centers for historical education projects, psychology research and engineering applications. In Cadiz, the university also intends to make its VR system available to local companies.
Each university has dedicated a classroom with 20 Vizard virtual reality software workstations to teaching students how to create interactive 3D environments. With Vizard, even students having little to no programming background can quickly create the most challenging interactive immersive virtual environment applications. With the software comes a “Teacher in Book”, specifically written as a guide to accompany academic virtual reality classes.
Peter Schlueer, President at WorldViz, comments: “With its easy to use scripting interface, Vizard is an ideal software tool for undergraduates who want to leap into the world of interactive 3D. We are excited that these Spanish universities have joined the Vizard community which includes hundreds of universities around the world. This project has been a promising kick-off to our new relationship with Ingevideo, who now acts as a distributor for WorldViz in Spain.”
