This nine song album from Punch From The Hip Records is a collection of American roots music, bluesy rock influenced tunes all penned by Darren and played by an eclectic group of musicians. This Old Life was produced by Mike Castonguay from Lukewarm Freeda Productions, (with 2 gold records under their belt.) He also plays bass and a variety of other instruments. In addition the album includes Jake Coco primarily on drums and percussion but also additional acoustic guitar. But This Old Life also features Mark Goldenberg (mostly known for his work with Jackson Browne) on electric guitars and lap steel guitar. Darren sings and plays acoustic and acoustic slide guitars, plus throws in a good dose of blues harp throughout the album. Mike and Jake are joined by Lynne McGovern on backing vocals to round out this very enjoyable sounding record.
Influences for the sound range from bands like, C,S,N & Y, Led Zeppelin, the Doors and John Fogarty. Darren has achieved a sweet balance of lyrical and musical imagery, at once honest, stark and raw and then again soothing. Destined to reach a wider audience This Old Life stands boldly in the face of modern music as both accepting and challenging with its old school approach.
Darren stated, "This marks a full circle return for me in many ways. Primarily, as a rejection of the artifice of trying to attain some "sound" or compete. Instead I have just relaxed into my roots musically as it were, but also in that I believe the lyric is more vulnerable, honest and direct. Either way I found the sounds brought together by Mike (Castonguay)
Whatever the intent the results are indeed pleasing to the ear with a fresh new take on some familiar "roots" forms.
