Archbishop Stepinac High School students will be honored for spearheading record coat drives on behalf of the Salvation Army—White Plains Corps over the past two years. The students will be recognized at the Salvation Army’s 22nd Annual Breakfast, Thursday, March 25 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, White Plains.
The students—all seniors—who directed last December’s 2009 drive are John Golebiowski, Idia Ogala and Robert Wilster.
The successful drive resulted in a donation of a record-breaking total of 288 used coats and other clothing in good condition for children, men and women just before the start of the holiday season and, as it turned out, a long and abnormally cold winter.
In their first coat drive in 2008 for the Salvation Army, Stepinac students collected 250 coats, the single largest coat drive ever for the local charity. The senior students who headed the drive were Colin Bereth, Carlos Guarin and Steven Miosku.
Captain Antonio Rosamilia, the corps commander, said that each year the corps and its advisory board “seek to honor members of this community who have demonstrated a deep passion for serving others.” He added: “The Stepinac students’ tireless efforts were especially appreciated because like other charities, the Salvation Army has experienced a decrease in contributions in this economy. In addition, since the recession began, unemployment has contributed to an increase in the number of people who need the Salvation Army’s help.”
Paul Carty, Stepinac Principal, said: “We are very proud of the student leadership who took charge of these initiatives and mobilized the student body, faculty and administration to make sure Stepinac would meet the challenge of helping families and individuals in our community who are experiencing hardships. Their achievements reflect well on Stepinac’s tradition of community service.”
The Salvation Army will also honor another White Plains leader—Valiere Alcena, M.D., MACP— for “making a difference in the lives of so many.”
