2 In 3 Believe The Ps3 Is Overpriced As It’s Revealed To Be The Most Popular Second Hand Console

The Sony PlayStation 3 is the most sought after second hand games console, according to listing and sales statistics – with survey results revealing that two thirds of the public think the Sony console is ‘overpriced’.

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar 16, 2010 -
The UK’s fastest growing independent second hand classified site, www.Preloved.co.uk, has today revealed record searches, sales and listings for games consoles, having seen a 119% increase in demand for consoles since Christmas.

PS3’s are the most searched for videogames consoles, closely followed by the Xbox 360 and then the Nintendo Wii.

To investigate the reason behind the second hand popularity of the PlayStation 3 in the last three months, Preloved.co.uk polled 1,492 members of the public to find out why there has been such a huge increase in the number of people looking to buy and sell their consoles.

Of the people that owned videogames consoles, the Xbox was the more popular choice with the majority, 42%, of gamers saying that they owned one. One in three console owners, 31%, said they owned a PlayStation 3, and a quarter, 23%, said they owned a Nintendo Wii.

The vast majority of the public, 67%, said they thought the PlayStation 3 was overpriced, whilst 49% said the Xbox 360 looked ‘weak’ in comparison to Sony’s next-gen console. 62% of those polled considered the exclusive titles on the PlayStation 3 ‘better’ than those on either the Wii or Xbox 360.

Naughty Dog’s ‘Uncharted 2’ is the exclusive title that would most sway the non-videogaming contingent to purchase a PlayStation 3, with 35% of those who said they didn’t own a PS3 admitting they’d buy one to play the game.

The Xbox 360-only ‘Halo 3: ODST’ is the game most likely to convert non-believers, according to the survey, with 28% of gamers suggesting it’s the title most likely to make them want to buy Microsoft’s next-gen offering.

67% of those who owned a console said that they would never sell it. Of the 1 in 3 who said that they would, 73% said that the biggest reason would be if they needed the money.

Of the 725 people polled that didn’t own a console, 2 in 3 said that they would consider buying one. 2 in 5 said that were looking to get a PS3, whilst 1 in 3 wanted an Xbox 360, 24% said that would like a different console.

Preloved.co.uk has a large number of listings for ‘classic’ consoles such as the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo, and decided to ask the public whether or not they still owned older generations of consoles. The most popular classic console was the Sega Megadrive, with 2% of videogamers admitting to still owning and regularly playing theirs. The SNES was the second-most popular, with 1% saying they still owned and regularly played it.

Ian Buzer, Managing Director of Preloved.co.uk said:

“Since Christmas, we’ve seen a huge rise in the number of people searching for PlayStation 3s onsite. Videogames consoles have always been popular on Preloved, and always sell quickly when listed, but we decided to investigate why this may have been – and were quite surprised at the results.”

He continued;

“Despite the fact that two-thirds of the public believe that the PS3 is overpriced, I’m not so sure that Sony bosses will be worrying – they still seem to be selling well. If demand continues at this rate, PlayStation 3s will be one of the biggest sellers on our site this year, as gamers unhappy to pay full price flock to buy them second hand.”
