LAS VEGAS, NV, MARCH 16, 2010: At ShoWest 2010 today, a new company with a rich history, SoliDDD™ Corp.(http://www.solidddmovies.com)
SoliDDD offer the highest-quality 3D system, which costs far less than all others and has a unique advantage: it runs on film (and, in the near future, on digital, too), rather than only digital. The company’s first product is a series of 3D projection lenses for existing theatrical film projectors.
The lenses are created by the same team that created the film 3D lenses used in the 1980s on “Friday The 13th III 3D” (Paramount), “Spacehunter”
SoliDDD’s value proposition to theaters is simple, says SoliDDD CEO Neal Weinstock: less expensive, higher quality 3D.
“For motion-picture producers and distributors, SoliDDD lenses can be hugely important,” said Weinstock. “There is a shortage of theaters for 3D. Our lenses are inexpensive enough to be included in a moderate production budget and then provided to theaters along with each release print. We can create a pipeline for distribution of releases that could otherwise find only short, cramped theatrical windows.”
The new generation of lenses has been designed using proprietary optical CAD software; they have a speed of f/2.0 with extremely high contrast MTF. The lenses are designed for easy installation, and simply replace the prime lens in the projector. They can be installed quickly in all 35mm film projectors. The new lenses incorporate design enhancements for speed and contrast. Focal lengths will be available from 30mm to 67.5mm (including 35mm, 38mm, 40mm, 42mm, 45mm, 50mm, 60mm, and specials on request) in increments to fit all theaters for maximum sharpness. Clients can determine the appropriate focal length for any theater by using a standard lens calculator, as they would for a normal, 2D lens.
Unlike other film-lens 3D offerings, SoliDDD lenses can handle lamp houses in the 7k+ range and large screen widths (more than 25 meters, or 82 feet). They have been tested extensively at 9k+ lamp brightness.
SoliDDD’s projection lenses can exhibit all “top and bottom” or “over/under”
“This business is not simply a short-term play on film in the several years left before digital takes over,” said Weinstock. “We are able to adapt the technology to fit digital projectors, too, and continue to offer a system that is far superior to others, and less expensive than others, in what will likely be a mostly digital market in about a decade.”
