Vetel Diagnostics, a leading provider of digital diagnostic imaging systems to veterinarians installed their EmpowerEQ Wireless DR system at the San Francisco Zoo. The SF Zoo converted from x-ray film to DR as it continually improves the technology and treatment of their 693 animals, ranging from endangered snow leopards to a 3,000 pound black rhinoceros.
Vetel’s Wireless DR system allows the zoo’s veterinarians and technicians flexibility and added care in treating their animals. Previously, with film x-rays it proved unfeasible to capture and sedate an animal, take film shots, run the film cassettes back to a processor, wait 15 minutes for verification of a clear image, and re-take if necessary. With Vetel’s Wireless DR System the SF Zoo staff has the capability to take images in the animals’ enclosures and exposing the images in less than 9 seconds. This also gives them the ability to take images of animals that were previously too large or logistically unfeasible to move.
Vetel Diagnostic's Engineer Michael Brurst mentioned at installation “The most impressive thing to me is the quality of the image. The images really speak for themselves. The wireless panel is a mature system that has well developed image algorithms and good track record for reliability.”
