In recent years, Britain has been unfortunate enough to earn itself the title of the “fattest” country in Europe. Government reports indicate that around 25% of adults in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are classified as obese, compared to 12% in Spain and just 9% in France.

Frequently dominating the headlines is the fact that the obesity epidemic seems to have spread to the nation’s children, with an estimated 1.5 million children in Britain being classed as overweight or obese. Children who are overweight are more likely to be obese as adults and anyone who is obese is at risk of developing – among other conditions - heart disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes.

Britain’s weight problem can be attributed, in the main, to the nation’s poor eating habits. A survey by the Food Standards Agency, published in February this year, suggests that only a third of adults eat the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and that many do not eat enough fibre. It also revealed that people commonly consume more than the recommended daily intake of salt, saturated fat and added sugar.

In response to these worrying statistics, the government are promoting their “Change4Life” campaign, which is described as a nationwide movement designed to prevent obesity and encourage people to eat better, exercise more and live longer. The scheme was launched as part of the Government’s ‘Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives’ strategy, and is supported by the Department of Health and the NHS. It is predominantly aimed at families with young children while an accompanying campaign, “Start4Life”, targets pregnant women and parents of babies.

First Response Training recognises the need for a greater awareness of eating well in today’s society and has responded by developing a Nutrition and Healthy eating training course. The course is 3 hours in duration and aims to provide delegates with the knowledge to help them follow a good, nutritionally balanced diet. It discusses the five major food groups and offers guidelines about how to maintain weight and calorie control.

The “Change4Life” scheme is about making choices that will help your family to lead a healthier life and our course explains which food choices are best and which should be largely avoided. It can help those who are responsible for what other people eat, such as child and adult carers.

Managing Director, Darren Eden, says: “We are really pleased to be able to offer a course that has so much relevance for contemporary society. A good diet is central to leading a healthy lifestyle and our course teaches delegates how to make informed choices that will benefit both themselves and anyone in their care. There is definitely a demand for a course of this type.”
