Citing TV news data and using California and Washington state governments as examples, Seattle Biz Coach columnist Terry Corbell writes poor government behavior is a leading cause of the poor economy. He says local TV news is partially to blame because bureaucrats don’t have to worry about accountability from a powerful medium.
“My sense is that a TV steady coverage of important issues would help put a stop to the government dysfunction,”
He points out local TV newscasts rely on newspapers for many story ideas. He contends unless there are opportunities for entertainment or shock video value, many stories are not broadcast. He believes governments are not being held accountable for poor operational practices and dysfunctional behavior.
“California state employees are given wide latitudes for leaves,” Mr. Corbell writes. "But only a third of the state agencies reportedly send certain payroll records to Sacramento. This means records are more costly to maintain, audit and verify such scattered cost centers, vis-à-vis a centralized location.”
In addition to California state government, he also mentions Washington state government.
“Just a few years ago, I devoted multiple columns about their shell game to furtively circumvent the state’s legal spending limit after incriminating e-mails were discovered,”
“It’s true that the financial-sector collapse and mortgages were major factors for the economic downturn,” he acknowledges. “So was the behavior of Wall Street, the abrupt terminations of credit lines to businesses, and the predatory practices of credit card companies charging huge interest rates and fees for bogus reasons to small businesses and consumers.”
He goes on to explain how the federal government has ostensibly tried to correct the problems, but has failed.
