Written and illustrated by Bjorn Ansbro, “This is Dot” presents children with a positive message of imagination, exploration and play. Opposing concepts, such as loud and quiet, light and dark, and night and day, help provide open-ended views into Dot’s world. Bjorn points out that designing Dot as a visual expression, rather than a cartoon or caricature, allowed him to break traditional story-telling patterns and create something flexible, interpretive, and unique. He explains, “I wanted ‘This is Dot’ to be completely universal with distinctive visuals that encourage imaginative interpretations and playful discussion.”
The response to “This is Dot” from children, parents, and child development professionals has been extremely positive. “Children seem to immediately identify with Dot and a number of parents have gone out their way to tell me about their own favorite page. It’s very gratifying,”
