PRLog (Press Release) - Mar 13, 2010 -
Paul Robeson is an internationally renowned and celebrated actor, athlete, lawyer, singer and activist.  Yet, this icon is all but removed from mainstream US history due to his radical socialist beliefs, which made him a prime target during the McCarthyist era. With an all female cast and crew, the icon Paul Robeson is presented in a solo lecture demonstration-like play, to introduce his major accomplishments to a new generation who may not have been exposed to his legacy.

The project is developed and directed by Mimi McGurl and assistant directed by Nora Aboali. Mimi’s Ph.D. dissertation “She’s Her Own Man” examines women playing men’s parts on the theatrical stage, which made developing this piece with Ms. Howard seem like fate.  As a performer, Kim highly reveres Paul Robeson as an inspiration for making the “impossible” possible. Bringing his experiences and life in reference to women, art and activism to the stage is a dream fulfilled.

WOW Theatre Café, a 30 year old collectively run all female and trans inclusive theater space, is the perfect venue for this tantalizing twist on a look at Robeson’s life. Turn out to enjoy the celebration.

March 18-21* & 25-28*, 8pm Showtime, *2pm Sundays
Tickets $15.00 available at http://www.paulrobesonproject.eventbrite.com
