(Staten Island, NY) -- March 11, 2010 - Staten Island community activist Artina Sharpton, in conjunction with hip hop artist and community activist, NYOIL, present The First Annual Blackbird Fly Conference and Ball, a two day special event for young women to facilitate cultural, social and personal growth through exposure to positive alternative lifestyles available to them. Focused on providing the young women ages 10 – 21, with guidance, mentoring, and development, The First Annual Blackbird Fly Conference and Ball will take place on March 27th and March 28th, 2010 at Cromwell Recreational Center 691 Bay St Edgewater Hall, Staten Island, New York 10301.
Inspired by Beetles hit, “Blackbird Fly”, the hit groups lyrics speak to the current the current situations experienced by the young girls and women in many inner city communities and provided the perfect soundtrack to motivate community activists toward change. On Saturday, March 27th, 2010, women of all backgrounds and classes, including Councilwoman Debi Rose, Honorable Judge Mundy, Def Poet Narubi, and writer Ivan Sanchez will gather to share their lives, pitfalls and triumphs all during the conference portion of the 2 day festivities. Sunday, March 28, 2010 will feature “The Rejuvenation”
