IsGood Woodworks has created a homeowner/professional teamwork program to bring high quality custom cabinetry to clientele on a budget. John Blunt is the proprietor and has been in the cabinet business for over eighteen years. Blunt offers his experience, expertise, modern shop and collaborative spirit to his clients’ projects. Clients are invited to join him as full partners in building their own project.
“Out of necessity, we want to get better at sharing resources [during the recession],”
“On our current project the homeowners guided the design, are casting their own unique cabinet pulls, and will do their own installation with guidance from us. We have extra tools we will loan them for the install. We look forward to our first full blown client involvement in the shop fabrication,”
Over the past 18 months Blunt has guided his company in a transformation from an eight person shop serving the ultra rich, to a community resource with all the advantages of an established and well equipped company. “Even before the financial meltdown we saw a decline coming. We had high overhead and were anticipating being saddled with a lot of expensive unused capacity. My employee Lynn Hilla suggested that we become a co-op. I did a quick double take then said ‘good idea!’
According to Blunt the co-op was an essential first step in moving his company in its new direction. “The co-op is well established and growing, and that encouraged us to look further. The WeBuild program is a natural extension of the opening of our resources to others.” Next: John and Lynn are planning a program of classes, and have started a free monthly Open Shop Day of lightly structured instruction, projects, and demonstrations available through their “Blunt Woodworks” organization at Meetup.com.
