This past Wednesday, Mexico’s Carlos Slim was named the world’s richest man.  

As reported in Reuters, Slim’s fortune is said to be worth $53.5 billion surpassing that of Microsoft’s Bill Gates.  The wealth of Carlos Slim comprises of some of Mexico’s well known department stores, Mexico’s biggest telecom operator, hotels, restaurants, oil drilling, building firms and Inbursa bank.  Outside of Mexico, Slim has holdings in prestigious groups like Saks and The New York Times Co.

Slim made his mark in 1990 when along with his partners he bought state telephone company Telmex for $1.7 billion.  Slim and his partners turned Telmex into a money maker and spun off America Movil expanding the company through acquisitions which led them to build the world’s No. 4 wireless operator.

Telephone companies have been receiving a lot of coverage in the news lately.  Many are acquiring  smaller companies for hundreds of millions, to help them stay on top of the market which is growing more and more competitive as consumers become more open to new options such as mobile advertising and VoIP services.  

America Movil SAB de CV ,  announced that MoreMagic Solutions, a leading mobile financial solutions provider and Telcel, which is the largest mobile operator in Mexico and subsidiary of America Movil have now made it easy for Telcel customers to recharge their mobile phones and transfer electronic airtime for Telcel’s prepaid users using the MoreMagic Solutions International Recharge Hub.  America Movil provides wireless communications services in Latin America with 90 million subscribers in 14 countries.  Telcel, also a wireless service provider, has 59.2 million clients with 90% of the Mexican wireless market.  MoreMagic Solutions operates in 60 countries worldwide offering transaction platforms for mobile operators, financial institutions, content providers, and distributors.  Shares of America Movil are trading between 47.40 and 48.06, down 0.23% at 47.78.  AMX hit its 52 week-high in mid January at 50.23.

Telefonica S.A. , reported that its net profit for the fourth quarter increased 22% year over year and the client base grew by 6.8 million accesses.  Nearly 65% of revenue and 58% of OIBDA came from outside Spain.  Due to its operating efficiency and ability to generate cash flow it has helped bring an OIBDA margin of 39.8% and 15,346 million euros of operating cash flow.  At the end of the year Telefonica had 265 million accesses worldwide.  Shares of Telefonica are trading between 73.74 and 74.47, up 0.38% at 73.76.

Vodafone Group Plc , reported that it won the contract to provide Deutsche Post DHL, with a fully managed MPLS network in 67 countries, connecting over 400 sites across Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.  Vodafone will provide Deutsche Post with an international wide area network across three regions and a domestic WAN in Sub-Saharan Africa.  No financial terms were disclosed.  Shares of Vodafone are trading at 23.00, up 0.97%, hitting a low of 22.968 and 23.18.  The 52 week-high stands at 24.04 from December 2009.
