"All but one of the four Irish citizens on Forbes Magazine's World Billionaires' list have advanced in the rankings during 2009.

Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry, Denis O'Brien, John Dorrance III and Sean Quinn all increased their net worth during the year, but Mr Dorrance's increase from $2.3bn to $2.4bn saw him slip from 296th to 400th on the list.

Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry is the richest Irish citizen on the Forbes list

The richest Irish citizen is Mr Shapoorji, a 79 year old Indian entrepreneur and construction tycoon, who is placed 129th. Mr. Shapoorji Mistry has moved up in the moved up the world rankings from his spot at 261 last year, his net worth having increased from $2.5bn to $5.8bn.

In 2006 he followed his wife and four children in obtaining Irish citizenship and has now become the richest man in Ireland. As India does not allow dual citizenship he renounced his Indian citizenship, but is still resident in Mumbai.

Mr Shapoorji Mistry owns an 18.5% stake in Tata Sons and is the largest shareholder in the Tata Group, India's largest private conglomerate. Despite his success in business, he is known for his media shyness and rarely appears in public.

He currently owns a 10,000 sq ft bungalow adjacent to the Osho Commune in Pune, India, known as the world's largest meditation resort.

The Mistrys are said to be passionate about horse racing, and own a 200 acre stud farm, which is also in Pune. It is reported that all the drinking water given to the horses, which total around 100, is filtered through Aqua Guard.

The Mistrys also own air and water purification systems company Eureka Forbes.

The next Irish entry on the list at number 258 is Dubliner Denis O' Brien. He advanced from his position last year at number 305, and is now worth $3.5bn, up from $2.2bn in 2009 according to Forbers.

The self made billionaire earned his fortune in the telecom business, and is currently expanding in the South Pacific in places such as Fiji, Tonga and Papua New Guinea.

John Dorrance III, the grandson of Campbell Soup founder, John Dorrance I, is the third richest Irish citizen, appearing at number 400 on the list. He has dropped a significant number of places from his position at number 296 in 2009, despite his net worth having risen from $2.3bn to $2.4bn.

The 66 year old, former American citizen currently resides in South Dublin, sold his the majority of his inherited 10.5% stake in the soup company ten years ago for around $1.5bn. It is thought that he renounced his US citizenship before selling in order to avoid estate and capital gains taxes.

According to Forbes, he currently keeps a low profile and spends much of his time holidaying in the Bahamas with his wife.

Sean Quinn is at number 421, having advanced from last year's position at 468.

He has previously held much higher rankings in the Forbes list, however the Chairman of Irish industrial conglomerate Quinn Group is still recovering from his disastrous gamble on a 25% stake in now nationalised Anglo Irish Bank.

Mr. Quinn has already made a significant recovery however, his net worth this year being $2.3bn up from last year's $1.5bn. The Fermanagh-based billionaire also has assets in real estate, hotels and pub chains.

The list also revealed that Mexican telecoms tycoon Carlo Slim Helu's fortune has overtaken Microsoft founder Bill Gates as the richest person in the world. This is only the second time since 1995 that Gates has not topped the list.

Helu (70) capitalised on the privatisation of Mexico's national telephone company in the 1990s and has now been revealed as the richest man in the world, with a net worth of $53.5bn, ahead of Gates on $53bn".  (Iain Todd, InsideIreland.ie)
