White Lake, MI – Calls to the Oakland County Road Commission began in the fall of 2008 for Susan Downey and several of her neighbors on Lindholm Drive in White Lake Township.

The problem began when the storm drain in front of several homes stopped up and the catch basins in front-yard ditches filled up with water.  Eventually, the excess ground water had no place to go but into the crawl spaces under homes.  “According to my next door neighbors there has never been a problem with water in the crawl spaces,” said Susan.

Susan called crawl space waterproofing companies to get estimates on the repair and one contractor told her the problem could not be fixed properly unless the Oakland County Road Commission fixed the storm drain.  “He told me that he could put in a drain system with a sump pump but it would just run continuously as the ground water continued to cycle back in.  I would be replacing a burned out sump pump at least once or twice a year, not to mention expensive electric bills,” said Susan.

Susan has made numerous calls to the Oakland County Road Commission who refuses to do anything about the problem.  “The woman who answers the phone just says we have to hope for a dry summer so the water goes away,” said Susan.  “They say that they are only working on roads that are flooded.”

Susan called Jim Runestad, the County Commissioner assigned to the White Lake area, hoping for positive results.  Jim has also called the Oakland County Road Commission to try to get the problem fixed.  “I think he really cares,” said Susan, “however, nothing has been done to fix the problem.”

Today (3/11/10) the catch basin in the bottom of the ditch is under about 2-1/2 feet of water.  Two nearby homes also have standing water in their front yard.  Rain is predicted for the next few days.  Homeowners who should be looking forward to the end of winter are dreading the spring season when front yards and crawl spaces will flood again.

Susan has posted a blog with articles about her concerns with living in a home with a wet crawl space.  She is sensitive to mold and she is concerned about a wet crawl space being a breeding ground for termites and other vermin.  Susan is reaching out to the public hoping someone will have an idea as to how the problem can be resolved.  Please visit her blog at   http://oaklandcountyroadcommission.blogspot.com/ to post your comments and suggestions.
