The nine-time European champions dominated the first-half as a spirited Cristiano Ronaldo surged down the left flank and surprised Lloris as he leveled the tie after scoring with a left-footed goal early in the game (6m). Gonzalo Higuaín struck the post in the 25th minute with what could have given Madrid the lead. Waves of Real Madrid attacks followed, but the patient build-up and elegant passes could not create a second goal and the Merengues failed to capitalize.
Lyon were a different side after the break, having had several chances before Miralem Pjanic's goal broke Real Madrid hearts and sent Lyon into the Champions League quarter-finals in a stunning 1-1 draw on Wednesday, eliminating the Spaniards from the Champions League 2-1 on aggregate.
The French side made two changes at the break and sprung to life in the second half with Lisandro López forcing a save from Iker Casillas in the 54th minute with a powerful, swerving shot from quite far.
With only 15 minutes to go Lyon stunned the crowd at the Bernabéu when Pjanic tucked home the goal from inside the area after being put through by López.

In the other important game of the evening Manchester United trounced AC Milan 4-0 with 2 goals by the inevitable Rooney while Park and Fletcher completed the humiliation in a game that saw David Beckham return to Old Trafford, but this time playing for Milan, who bowed out after also losing at home 2-3 in the first tie. Sir Alex Ferguson’s team head into the quarter-finals with an aggregate 7-2 win to join yesterday’s winners Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
