Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort, a recipient of the ASEAN Green Hotel Recognition Award 2007-2009 for its “commitment to environmental protection and outstanding efforts in environmental conservation”, will be turning its lights off for one hour from 20.30 (08.30 PM) on Saturday, 27 March 2010 in support of Earth Hour.

The 470-room Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort will shut down non-essential lighting in its buildings and unoccupied guest rooms while encouraging guests to switch off non-essential lights in their rooms.

Initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the global movement is expected to be the largest climate event in history. In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.

“We are pleased to support this world-wide environmental initiative,” said Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort General Manager Rudolf Borgesius. “As the Resort is known for its pristine beach and lush tropical surroundings, our setting is one of our greatest assets. Responsibly caring for this, and also for the larger environment we belong to, is a responsibility we take seriously,” he added.

Since its opening in 1987, Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort has continually strived to minimize its impact on the environment with emphasis on waste reduction, efficient energy management, water conservation, and active participation in community green programmes.

These efforts were positively noted when the Resort received a Five Green Leaf Certification from the Board of Environmental Promotion of Tourism Activities (BEFTA) for conducting environmentally friendly operations in 2001 and again in 2003. It also holds a Silver Award from the Green Leaf Foundation and Thai Health Promotion Foundation for 2007 to 2009.
