From shining shoes in the streets of Ethiopia, two brothers are helping the unemployed in America.
New York City, March 8, 2010-Success always favors the bold and the hardworking. It's not a simple old adage anymore; many have proved it before. Now, Joseph and Fares Gessese have proved it again. Coming from Ethiopia, the second poorest country in the world, both of them had a hard living in their earlier life. From the very start of life, they had to endure many hardships as a part of the struggle for existence, as they had lost their father at a very early age. Their mother had no way, other than to leave the children with their grandmother and move to America. Both children had a very hard time and during this period they suffered beating, jail and hard labor; Joseph was nine years and Fares was just six! That time, Ethiopia was under the rule of the famous dictator, Mengistu Haile Mariam.
Zerfinash, their mother who was having just a primary education to arm herself, was only successful in grabbing a job as a House-Keeper at Marriot Hotel in Virginia. But with hard work and dedication, she managed to save some money. With this she brought Joseph and Fares to America. For some time she managed with her insufficient funds; but couldn't continue that for a longer period and decided to send the children to a free private Christian school at Grundy, VA. She was sure that both will get good education and she was right. Years passed, and when Joseph too completed his high school in 1997, she returned back to Ethiopia, for starting a new life!
Just after the completion of their schooling, both boys stayed with some of their relatives in Washington DC; but at the same time they had already decided to continue their education, while doing some work for supporting themselves. During the summer time of 2000 both decided to move to Fort Wayne, IN. They didn't idle away their precious time; instead they utilized it for gathering further knowledge about becoming able entrepreneurs. They were frequent visitors of the local library and from there they devoured very many books connected with entrepreneurship. After months long research they decided to float their first business. They started their own carpet cleaning business, with the main stress on the low income families. Slowly they began to grow and moved to Columbus, with a view of expanding their growing business. By hard work and sincerity they were really successful and became the founders of African Midwest Yellow Pages, African Cup USA and also started to function as the franchisee of the 4th largest tax service of America, Instant Tax Service.
