March 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Santa Barbara, CA. March 8, 2010. -- Santa Barbara Artist Nicola Bandak (aka Banduechy, so named by his handball buddies) of Riktr Art Studio just completed an Alzheimer’s Memorial Mural Project called Memories.   My mural client wanted pieces of a dream, past memories, and family members painted onto an outdoor patio mural exposed to the elements of nature, says Nicola Bandak of Riktr Art Studio in Santa Barbara. The eight by six foot outdoor mural was created for my client’s wife who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The couple has a beautiful long history together which started when she was sixteen and they have now been married forty-four years. One of the main reasons for doing the mural was that it might help his wife remember their memories that they had shared together. She can now look outside into the patio from her living room or go outside and sit on the patio and see the Memories mural.

The outdoor mural project was started in December 2009 and finished in late February 2010.  My client drew up a very rough sketch and it was decided a computer software program was used to lay out the project. Sheet metal was the material of choice to do a custom Triptych, a three-part work of art, with three panels (32” x 72” each) that fit together to form the mural. The mural was done with all acrylic paint and sealers. The client wanted to build a special frame for the mural to allow the mural to pivot and move out of the patio walkway allowing more room for his wife to pass through the walkway.

The client wanted his memory of Rabbit Ears Pass in Steamboat Springs, CO to be part of the mural landscape because he and his wife vacationed there every summer for over twenty years. The client also wanted the following elements included in the Memories mural: their four grandchildren, a stream, tire swing, child’s wagon, trees, flowers, the Waterford Condos, air balloon, airplane (the client used to pilot), cumulus clouds, coal train, an image of his wife, and a small isolated cabin in the mountains. Nicola took all these elements, added a few extra compositional elements of his own to move the viewers eye around the painting and add to the murals overall cohesive compositional structure.

Nicola comments, “I usually take on projects where the clients feel comfortable enough to let me into their world and I get to know them on a personal basis, that way the art is as personal for them as it for me. Therefore, if the client does not like a particular area of a painting or surface, they feel comfortable enough discussing it with me.  I might have to redo an area a few times for a client to be satisfied which is okay, because making them happy makes me happy.  I took my client’s memories and tell their story through paint brushes using bright acrylic colors and interesting placement of compositional elements.  I enjoyed this project immensely and put my heart and soul into each brush stroke.”
