Bucking horses and their riders will vie for $60,000 in a one-of-a-kind bucking horse competition in Glen Rose on March 26 – 28.
In this bucking horse only competition, horses will compete against each other depending on their age and style of bucking. In addition to the saddle bronc and bareback events that are featured at professional rodeos, ranch horses have also been added to the schedule.
A ranch horse is one that has been bred to buck but its wild and exotic bucking style is not suited to professional rodeo. These horses may jump in the air taking all four feet off the ground, rear and spin. To add extra spice to the class they will be ridden by cowboys riding in a regular working saddle.
The bareback and saddle bronc horses are classified as Classic horses due to their classical and rhythmical style of bucking that is favored by PRCA cowboys. Cowboys will ride for up to eight seconds or until they are thrown in regulation PRCA rigging.
The Classic and Ranch competitions are further divided by age. Younger horses will contest for Futurity and Derby titles and will be bucked with a remote controlled dummy for six and eight seconds respectively. The futurity class is for two year old horses while the derby is for three year olds.
“Fans can expect to see equine athleticism at its greatest.” said Joy Hawks, a former WPRA world champion bareback rider and President of the American Buckinghorse Registry. “These horses are powerful individuals who have been bred to buck and love bucking. With this much money up for the breeders and stock contractors to win you can expect so see some of the best young horses in the Country.”
This is the first event to be produced by the national body the American Buckinghorse Registry. Entries are still open for both riders and horses.
The first horse is set to buck at 8 pm on Friday and Saturday night at the Somervell County Expo and Amphitheatre in Glen Rose. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for children with kids 5 and under getting in free.
Admission to the Futurity and Derby is free. These classes are scheduled to start at 11:00 am on Saturday and Sunday.
