Here’s the story: Athena Crowley is an ordinary eleven-year old girl who lives in an extraordinary place: a resort hotel in the Bahamas. Her father is the marine archeologist who discovered the Mythical Lost City of Atlantis, for which the hotel is named. Athena’s mother was lost years ago when a freak whirlpool took her away.
Athena goes to school, rides the water slides, and helps out at the hotel’s dolphin encounter… a fairly normal life. But everything changes the day an old turtle starts talking to her, and Athena realizes that she can communicate with sea creatures. Determined to understand her roots, Athena takes a risky journey to the undersea kingdom of Atlantica, where mer-people rule, humans are slaves, and dangerous and thrilling surprises await her.
“The Girl From Atlantis” is the first book for children from noted filmmaker Richard Schenkman (“The Man From Earth”, “A Diva’s Christmas Carol”, “The Pompatus of Love”). “I’ve been reading to my daughter every night since she was an infant,” Schenkman recalls. “We both love the ocean -- swimming, snorkeling, admiring sea creatures, looking for mermaids... One day, we were on vacation in the Bahamas and this story just came to us. We worked it out together, and then I started writing as soon as we came home. It just poured out of me.”
Accomplished young illustrator Humberto Braga came on board the project, and now the book is available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and other fine retailers.
Richard Schenkman is available for readings, signings, interviews and appearances in classrooms & libraries. Please send an email to: email@example.com.
