Kenya remains the main hub and centre for wildlife safaris in Africa. With changes in travel and tourism trends, coupled with the prevailing weather conditions, Kenya continues to offer wildlife variety and scenic landscapes to all.
From the depths of the Lake Magadi – located only 1000m above sea level to the peaks of Mount Kenya – standing at 5199 meters above sea level, Kenya has managed to remain as a darling safari destination to many. Be it bird watching in Kenya, Wildlife safaris, beach holidays, ecological expeditions, adventure sports…Kenya will indeed surprise you.
Buffalo Springs and Samburu national reserve remain personal favorites to me. These two rare national reserves are located north of Kenya at approximately 350 kilometers from Nairobi city. The national reserves of Samburu and Buffalo springs will offer you sightings of the Big five animals save for the Black and White Rhino. Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and Elephant are indeed available for your viewing…well…
Both these reserves are a delight to have them included in your upcoming Kenya Safari. Some of the animals found here are not to be found anywhere else south of the Equator. Just to mention but a few…they are;
The Reticulate Giraffe- Only to be found at these reserves north of the equator. The other species of giraffe found in Kenya are the Rothschild – found at the Lake Nakuru national Park, The Masai Giraffe – common at the Masai Mara reserve among other parks.
The Grevy Zebra – This Zebra is notably larger than its counterpart, the common Zebra and has smaller and thinner stripes.
The Beisa Oryx- easily notable for the long and nearly straight horns, black stripe along the flanks and head with definite black and white pattern.
The Long necked Gerenuk- Notable for its long neck, long limbs and horns recurved backwards.
Other notable species easily seen but not exclusive to this region are the Pygmy falcon, Somali Ostrich – notable for its bluish limbs and neck and numerous other bird species.
These are some of the species that make the Samburu and Buffalo spring national reserves remain a gem in Kenya. As you continue to organize your next or first Safari to Kenya, be sure to include this area that remains scenic and semi arid. During the wet season, there is an explosion of life as the Ewaso ngiro and Isiolo rivers fill with water.
These two rivers are responsible for maintaining the wildlife and ecological balance within these reserves.
Samburu and Buffalo Springs national reserves; a must for your Africa Kenya Safari.
