March 4, 2010 - PRLog -- "Contrary to popular myth, Hypnosis is a powerful tool that can be used to bring health and well-being into anyone's life," Consulting Hypnotist Stephen Gruber told a very interested recent meeting of the Quebec Provincial Association of Retired School Educators  (QPARSE). Gruber, who runs a very successful Hypnosis practice at Montreal's Queen Elizabeth Health Complex, went on to explode a number of myths that have been circulating for years thanks to the popular portrayal of hypnosis by stage hypnotists and Hollywood.

One of the biggest myths he addressed was that "people will lose consciousness when in hypnosis."  Nothing could be further from the truth Gruber explained to the meeting.  In fact hypnosis is a very focused state of conscious that is experienced by most people quite naturally several times a day.

One of several examples Gruber gave of this was the so called "Highway Hypnosis" phenomena.  Most people have had the experience of arriving at the destination they were driving to only to realize that they have been completely unaware of the driving experience, being focused on thinking about something else entirely.

Whenever, we act "automatically" we are in a trance, he explained.  Of course the same applies when we automatically reach for a cigarette when we pick up the phone, or find ourselves at the fridge when we feel we deserve a reward.  "However we are far from being unconscious  while experiencing these things," Gruber noted.

Other  myths that were addressed included:

That we can be made to do something we don't want to in Hypnosis (not true, we can't),
That  only the weak  minded can be hypnotized (not true, the more intelligent you are the easier it is to enter hypnosis),
That the hypnotist possesses some supernatural power to force people into hypnosis (not true, hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of consciousness under the control of the person in hypnosis),
That we could get "stuck" in Hypnosis (not true, have you ever been "stuck" asleep, in a day dream or awake?  Hypnosis is just another state of consciousness that we move in and out of all day)

Gruber was thanked by QPARSE Director Renate Sutherland for "an enjoyable presentation that provided phenomenal insight into the power of hypnosis to be used for people's good."  Attendees  then went on to sign up for the free Self Hypnosis Mp3 available at Gruber's web site, http://www.ask-the-hypnotist.com after Sutherland told the meeting that she had already used the Mp3 with great success herself.
