(March 3, 2010) The buzz this week is centres on carrier-grade in-home wireless local networking devices capable of connecting a number of devices that are Ethernet equipped to an Ethernet-accessible HDTV or Home Theatre being rolled out at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany.
While the concept of wireless connexion of HDTV and auxiliary devices is not new, Netgear is introducing a slightly different spin on the connectivity issues. Specifically, the Netgear equipment is capable of handling full 1080p video and audio streams at 300Mbps data rates to and from multiple devices; such as, game consoles – X-Box, PS2, Wii, etc. – and Blu-Ray, PCs, and similar Ethernet-equipped devices at nearly twice the speed of Wireless-N and with much higher reliability and ability to penetrate walls and still deliver optimal performance. This solution could also be used for connecting multiple HDTVs in the home to an Ethernet broadband device such as an Ethernet-ready cable or satellite box, http://www.myhdpackage.com can report.
This is cutting edge technology commanding premium price points at the moment. However, as the technology matures and other manufacturers get on board, the prices should drop 10 to 20%. Pricing is currently slated in the £50-£60 range. It will become available in Q3 2010.
The Netgear WNHD3004 is a Wireless-N high definition device designed to handle multiple HD streams in excess of 40MBps 99.9% of the time, even in homes with above average wall density. It is a completely stand-alone product requiring no set-up or installation other then connecting to the mains and attaching the Ethernet cables. It operates on a separate frequency range than WiFi or conventional wireless gateways and it is far less prone to interference.
Netgear is also unveiling a similar device for USB port-equipped equipment, the WNCE2001 is able to provide carrier-grade communications in a small package that does not require external power. This will help clear the clutter of Home Theatre and HDTV cables and power mains wiring. A pair is retail priced in the less than £40 range. It is available now.
The advantages are obvious: No in-house hard-wiring or the dodgy response of existing wireless technology and superior throughput able to simultaneously handle multiple HD streams. Also, there is no need to replace expensive older equipment with newer equipment simply to have high-bandwidth wireless capability. This definitely is pair of products to watch.
