After the success of its Trees4Business 500 tree planting in 2009, BlueSquare Data’s Robin Ellis says that they look forward to planting another 500 trees each year as a major annual statement of the company’s commitment to the environment.
The Alladale Wilderness Reserve & Eco-tourism Development is an innovative 23,000 acre project to restore a large segment of the Scottish Highlands to its original, pristine condition. Oxford University is conducting scientific research in order to provide evidence that will underpin biological conservation in the Highlands using the Alladale Reserve as a test bed for innovation and best practice. The project involves planting large numbers of indigenous trees, and providing appropriate help for native animals and plants to recover their former domain. This is probably the coolest environmental project in Britain and BlueSquare Data is proud to be part of it.
As an ISO 9001 leading data centre provider, BlueSquare Data recognises the ongoing impact that its server-hosting business has on the environment. Working towards achieving the ISO 14001 environmental management certification, BlueSquare Data continues to push forward its environmental initiatives.
Robin Ellis, group commercial director, says, "It's incremental rather than dramatic change, but we continue to implement carbon and energy savings which are not just friendly to the environment but make us more cost-effective too." For example, data servers generate a lot of heat whilst operating, which requires cooling to prevent the servers from over-heating. BlueSquare Data deploys the most carbon-friendly equipment to manage this cooling process, and has evaluated the best suppliers on the market. Airedale is recognised as a global leader in the field of environmentally-
As a further environmental initiative BlueSquare Data has also installed sophisticated equipment to reduce the electricity consumption of its data centres and increase equipment life. Power consumption has been reduced by a third, which makes a significant difference in operating costs despite rocketing energy prices.
BlueSquare Data also shreds and recycles all of its paper and most packaging materials, with the exception of polystyrene. The BlueSquare Data kitchens have separate bins for food, cans, and plastics; an innovation suggested by staff via the company’s ‘green’ suggestion box. The people at BlueSquare Data have strongly embraced the environmental ethos and are pleased that their company is environmentally aware. It pays to be cool, as BlueSquare Data and its staff can testify.
