Shepherd’s Center Central introduced its newest program, KC Caregiver Supportline by hosting three resource and referral breakfasts across the metro last week.

Fifty-three individuals, representing home health organizations, nonprofits, hospices, congregations, retirement living and law firms were introduced to the KC Caregiver Supportline. These individuals will be the program liaisons to the community.

“I enjoyed the event and found the opportunity to network very valuable,” said Stacy Higgins, Volunteer Coordinator of Heartland Home Health and Hospice.

The response was overwhelming and area organizations are contacting the Center for future speaking dates to be scheduled at their organization.

The KC Caregiver Supportline is a professional service, staffed by an aging specialist with extensive experience working with caregivers and knowledge of area aging programs and services. Founded in 1972, Shepherd’s Center Central was born from the concept of older adults caring for each other. Our volunteers, mid-life and older adults, help enhance the lives of other older adults through learning opportunities, a focus on wellness and services to help people remain in their homes. With many successful programs and services already in place, Shepherd’s Center continues to seek new ways to serve the needs of residents in the Brookside and Waldo communities. The KC Caregiver Supportine was launched in November 2009. This unique KC Caregiver Supportline will connect caregiver's of older adults (60+) with specific programs and services that will meet their individual needs. The Caregiver Supportline is being developed in coordination with the UMKC School of Social Work and The University of Kansas Landon Center on Aging. This program will also include a volunteer Peer Counseling component connecting caregiver's and volunteers when appropriate.
