Although Atlanta rapper TI fresh out of the “joint” is on his grind with his new clothing company AKOO drama has begun over a billboard ad drawing much criticism from a Newark New Jersey community. The billboard on the corner of Market and Washington Streets depicts a woman kneeling down in front of a man who’s jeans are hanging unbuckled exposing his underwear while the woman clutches at his jeans.
The community is up in arms and there is talk women’s groups may ask consumers to boycott his clothing.
AKOO which sells shirts, jackets, and jeans is an acronym for A King Of One’s Self was established by T.I and his Grand Hustle Entertainment business partner Jason Geter.
Corey Booker the mayor of Newark made the following statement: “So often when I am out in the community I see kids wearing their pants too low and others using inappropriate language in public,” “I will work with my city council to see if we can address this so we don’t see these types of advertisements in our city in the near future.”
Newark City Council President Mildred Crump added that the AKOO billboard is an “example of a lack of regard over the impact of images that paint a negative picture of our city.” “I’m so sick of people seeing Newark as a place where they can do whatever they want. “They think they can put it in a Black community and nobody is going to say or do anything,”
Company spokesmen for AKOO cried foul pointing out that other clothing companies like Calvin Klein have far racier ads and sell more jeans depicting partially clad models while AKOO has no nudity still in response to the uproar the AKOO company removed the billboard ad and replaced it with a much less risqué depiction of a model with an AKOO jacket over his shoulder.
