Backpacking alone or with friends? Which is better? Well, firstly, it isn't a matter of one being better or worse than the other.

March 3, 2010 - PRLog -- It is about finding the right fit for you. Backpacking with a friend, or a group of friends, can be a distinctly different experience to that of solo travel, so making that decision is almost as important as deciding where to go!

Backpacking alone

Backpacking alone is very liberating as there is no need to compromise and you have the freedom to choose when, where and how you travel without having to consult anyone else. If you are outgoing, meeting new people and making new friends will not be an issue. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be outgoing, travelling alone is the perfect opportunity to express yourself and come out of your shell, something travelling with friends may not allow.

There are many misconceptions about travelling alone, including feelings of loneliness and vulnerability, but you will not be the only person travelling! Everywhere you go there will be other travellers, so as long as you can make friends, there is no need to worry.

However, it is true that travelling alone will be slightly more expensive as there may be no-one to share the cost of a taxi or a trip, and sometimes there will be no-one around to share the weight of a heavy load.

Backpacking with friends

Sharing amazing travel adventures with your friends can create life long memories and make those “boring” days and long trips more bearable! There are the obvious advantages of always having a close friend nearby who can share the travel costs and take those not to be missed photos without fear of your camera being stolen.

If you are more comfortable following the lead of others then travelling with friends is ideal. However, if you are more head strong and like to do whatever you want, whenever you want, then travelling with friends may not be the best option. There are many stories of close friends going travelling together who fall out and damage their relationship for good because they both refuse to compromise.

Whilst travelling will no doubt be one of the greatest experiences of your life, it is essential you properly plan and research your travels. Think carefully about where you are going and who are going to go with.

Whether you decide to travel alone or travel with friends, make sure you purchase backpacker travel insurance so you are not left high and dry in a foreign land. Direct Travel Insurance offers excellent gap year travel insurance to cover you and your belongings whilst you experience all the different cultures and exciting countries across the world.

If you use your common sense, and avoid getting yourself into situations you don’t feel comfortable in, then you will have a blast!
