ROCKFORD, Illinois - His first novel shadowed the Tiger Woods fall from grace - and did it almost 2 years before the news story broke. Now Doug Shiloh (http://www.dlshiloh.com)
"It's an accessible story that people can relate to," Shiloh said, from his home in northern Illinois. "It stands at 90,000 words, a bit longer than the first one so far. The difference with this one is that out front it's got the marks of a good old fashioned story."
Shiloh is still tight-lipped about the characters and a concrete storyline, other than the 'sad buy funny' novel is about those in a Massachusetts family through the 1950s to the Present Day, as well as the women in the main character's life. Shiloh graduated Enrico Fermi High School in Enfield, Connecticut, right across the state border from where his characters live.
"You always hope to find characters you enjoy and when you have to leave them, it hurts. There's a couple I really take to - such fun to write about, and they have that up-down life that is striking. Yeah, with some of these plot points, it's real difficult. I wake at 5 a.m. to write and I've spent the whole night prepared to face the story. I'm doing this for me, but also for the reader. There are some heroes and regular people, and a few villains this time around, especially one who's like every jerk you meet in real life. So it's fun to see what happens to him."
