MARIAN OSHER: SEEN UNSEEN

Exhibition: March 2 - March 27, 2010
Reception: March 4, 2010    6 - 8 pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 1-6 pm

New Art Center is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of paintings by Maryland based artist, Marian Osher. An opening reception for the artist will take place on Thursday March 4 from 6 to 8 PM. The exhibition will be on view from March 2 through March 26, 2010.

Marian Osher’s paintings synthesize her fascination with the urban world of New York City and her experiences as an eco artist. Osher finds unseen connections to the world of nature in the abstract textures of city surfaces. Inspired by the peeling paint and paper of Chelsea construction walls, the shadows on sidewalks and the random cracks on crosswalks, she creates textured paintings that become references to natural forms and landscape.  The floral tributes strewn on the mosaic stones of the John Lennon Imagine Memorial in Central Park speak to her of the organic and changing metamorphosis of life. Seen/Unseen presents to the viewer new avenues and possibilities for making a connection with nature in the urban environment.

“The stimulating wealth of textures, colors, shapes and lines of city surfaces reveals visual surprises and insights that can enhance the unseen world within each of us. If we really take the time to see, we can enrich our appreciation of the visual world we live in, wherever that may be.” Marian Osher

Marian Osher’s 2007, 2008 and 2009 solo shows in New York and Washington, DC focused on environmental issues. Multiple volunteer experiences in Montana for the Buffalo Field Campaign also inspired artwork to raise awareness of the plight of the Yellowstone Buffalo. In 2007, the Environmental Defense Fund selected Osher’s artwork for the cover of their Pocket Seafood Selector, which helps consumers to make environmentally sound seafood choices. Previous solo shows have explored spirituality and universal connections between diverse cultures and the natural world. Osher’s artwork has been included in exhibitions in New York, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Museum of Modern Art in Argentina and shows in Brazil, Belgium and India. In addition to working as a printmaker and painter, Osher is a private art instructor who has guided many students in college art portfolio development and helped them to launch careers in various fields of art.
