In December of 2009, 791 cases were filed in U.S. district courts for alleged violations of the FDCPA, bringing the total number of cases for 2009 to 8,374, according the FDCPA Case Listing Service LLC.
For the calendar year of 2009, there were 9,307 plaintiffs. California led the country with 1,446 plaintiffs followed by New York (1,123), Florida (894), Pennsylvania (792) and Illinois (762). The number of plaintiffs in CA, NY and FL for 2009 equaled the number of cases filed in the U.S. for the entire calendar year of 2007.
According to FDCPA Case Listing Service LLC, almost half of all the cases filed in 2009 included a cause of action around lack of meaningful disclosure of the caller's identity or improper disclosure by the caller.
