LOS ANGELES, Calif., March 1, 2010 – NBC Universal will be awarded the 2010 Visionary Award from the University of Southern California for the company's NBC Universal Evolution Plan, a long-term renovation and construction plan for the company’s 391-acre Universal City, Calif. property. The Evolution Plan calls for major upgrades and improvements that will result in enhanced production and post-production facilities, additional office space, and a new residential neighborhood with 35 acres of green open space. Improved and expanded transit connections promise to make the property, which includes the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, a revitalized entertainment and social hub. The plan is a pilot project in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) Program.
NBC Universal projects the plan will boost Los Angeles County’s economy by generating $2 billion annually in new economic activity while creating over 31,000 new jobs during the four to 10-year construction period. Upon its completion, the Evolution Plan is expected to create 12,000 new full and part-time jobs throughout the county and an additional $26 million in new tax revenue annually for the city and county.
Thomas Smith, NBC Universal’s senior vice president of West Coast real estate, will deliver the 16th Annual Construction Management Symposium’s keynote address, upon which he will accept the award on behalf of NBC Universal. Master Architect Mark Rios of Rios Clementi Hale Studios will also address the symposium, enlightening guests on the project’s design and architectural details.
