A Washington state organization, Enterprise Washington, steps up political efforts to develop a healthy economic climate and create jobs, according to Seattle Biz Coach Terry Corbell.
His reports how the organization recruits business-friendly political candidates to even the playing field in the Washington State Legislature, which constantly passes tax bills and other measures that hinder economic development.
“In trying to solve a $2.8 billion budget shortfall, Washington state lawmakers are debating the wrong issues,” writes The Biz Coach. “Instead of debating whether to increase the sales tax or to eliminate tax exemptions for industries, lawmakers would better serve voters if they dealt with the core issue.”
Mr. Corbell says the core issue is developing a healthy economic climate and public policies that help; not hinder creation of private-sector jobs.
“Most businesses have had to significantly cut payroll – the unemployment rate is high – 175,000 jobs have been lost in two years,” he winces. “However, instead of being good stewards of taxpayer assets, many public officials are frantically looking to spend money and generate more tax revenue. The only jobs the state helps to create are government jobs to hinder the economic climate.”
Worse, he writes, state pensions are 74 percent higher per person than the private sector.
“And the Legislature has failed to fund at least $7.9 billion in healthcare and pension liabilities – a financial time bomb set to explode,” warns The Biz Coach. “Thirty percent or more of business headaches are caused by poor government policy. These and countless other issues pollute the economic climate and hinder business.”
But, he writes, help is on the way.
“At the grass roots level, Enterprise Washington is an organization effectively clearing the air by recruiting and helping business-friendly candidates get elected to office,” explains Mr. Corbell.
