In the past few months, Karen I. Hirsch's images have won distinction in international competitions including PX3 - Prix de la Photographie in Paris, the Los Angeles based International Photography Awards, and the London-based Black and White Spider Awards. In addition, The Lab by Apollo in Milwaukee, Wisconsin selected Hirsch as their featured photographer on their website for the month of February.
Her award-winning images illustrate the broad range of Hirsch's capabilities and creativity. In one of her winning shots, she captures the action and drama of a cowboy round-up. In another, she shows the juxtaposition of silhouetted people within an abstract form. The photos demonstrate her ability to create artistic work in both black and white and color. The Lab by Apollo is featuring some of her painterly portraits - photo interpretations made in the computer on their website. The Lab is also displaying some of her photojournalistic imagery, including sailboat racing photos for which she is known.
To receive recognition in the various competitions, Hirsch's images were evaluated by panels of distinguished judges representing the captains of the photographic industry - jurors included experts from the Tate Gallery, Magnum Photo, the world picture editor of Time Magazine, director of Sotheby's Institute of Art, the managing editor of Communication Arts, and curators of art galleries and museums from around the globe. Thousands of entries from tens of countries were judged to make the final selection for the international competitions.
