PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 27, 2010 -
Fullerton, CA - On Friday, February 26, 2010, at 1100 hours, at the Air Combat USA headquarters located at the Fullerton Municipal Airport, Violet “Vi” Cowden will take to the skies once again in a warbird.  The significance is Vi Cowden is 94 years young, and 68 years ago, she delivered pursuit aircraft all over the United States as a (WASP) Women’s Airforce Service Pilot and you are invited to join us.

Nearly 25,000 women applied to the WASP Program, of which 1,830 were accepted. Of the 1,830, 114 were assigned to fly pursuit airplanes including the famous P-51 Mustang, the P-38 and the P-47.  Vi Cowden was one of those chosen to fly these fighter aircraft for the United States Army Air Force in March of 1943.

“I just wanted to fly, and they needed us.” Vi said.  Having qualified in and flown 19 different airplanes during World War II, her recognition for service to her country continues when on March 10, 2010, at the age of 94, Vi will travel to Washington DC to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, the United States Military’s highest honor.

Vi is truly an inspiration to everyone she meets.  In one of her most recent adventures, the 89-year-old went skydiving and jumped with the U.S. Army Golden Knights, a team of precision parachutists. So from flying all types of aircraft to taking her "12,000-foot plunge," a feat that she was thrilled to do, and one that most people have never even worked up the courage to attempt, it can easily be said that Vi Cowden is one remarkable woman.
