OGDEN, Utah – It’s down to the wire in one of the world’s most strenuous sporting competitions. No, it’s not the winter sports taking place this weekend in Vancouver. It’s the grueling 2010 Crossfit Games coming this weekend to Ogden, Utah. What makes them so difficult is the fact the participants don’t even know the exact events they will be competing in until right before the showdown.
“This competition is a demanding challenge of competitors strength, stamina, endurance and athletic ability,” said Damon Stewart with Wasatch Crossfit. “People who Crossfit come from all walks of a life but are united in aspect of their personality…
Participants have been training all year for this stepping stone to the Regionals and ultimately Worlds without having any idea what to prepare for. Part of the ultimate challenge of the event is finding out at the last minute what feats will decide the winners.
“You train by simply performing functional movements at high intensity,” Stewart said. “Crossfit is definitely a passion that unites the members of our 20 Crossfit gyms in Utah with the over 1800 Crossfit gyms located all over the world.”
Last year, the events in the final included a seven kilometer hill run; deadlifting one rep every 30 seconds in weights ranging from 315 to over 500 pounds; rowing 400 meters and then pounding a four foot stake into the ground; and a 170 meter hill sprint with two 35 pound sandbags.
“It is a hard event that really challenges the fitness level of the participants,”
The Nevada-Utah Sectionals will take place this weekend at 1221 East 5800 South in Ogden. There will be an opening address at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the competition at 9:00 a.m. On Sunday, the first heat will start at 9:00 a.m.
