Ruben Martinez, owner of Libreria Martinez, the largest Hispanic bookstore in the United States, is partnering with five Chapman University students to promote awareness about the upcoming 2010 Census.
The bookstore, located at 1110 N. Main Street in Santa Ana, will host a Census Celebration event on Feb. 27 at 1:00 p.m., as the grand finale to a month of informing and educating residents on the importance of participating in the 2010 Census.
The event marks the conclusion the campaign, conducted by a student team who is competing in the PRSSA Bateman national public relations competition to research, plan, and implement a public relations campaign for the 2010 Census between Feb. 1 and Feb. 28.
The team focused their work on demographics the U.S. Census Bureau has identified as “hard to count,” including college students and the Hispanic community. Through informative literature, several organized booths, social media tools, and publicity stunts, the students created a campaign to introduce, educate, and celebrate the 2010 Census with local residents in the city of Santa Ana and students at Santa Ana College and Chapman University.
“Our campaign focused on the theme of “celebrating”
The team also partnered with Miss California Latina Vivian Fabiola Valdez, U.S. Census Bureau rep Marlo Rivera, Orange County Transportation Authority, Santa Ana College Associated Student Government, Chapman University Men’s Basketball team, Chapman University Women’s Softball team, Chapman University Dean of Students Jerry Price, and Zpizza for several different events during the month of February.
The campaign aimed to create a fun, positive association with the upcoming Census and generate interest, clarify confusion, questions, or concerns, and encourage people to “RSVP” to participate.
Over 150 students “RSVP’d to participate”
