Eco-friendly Activities Highlight Second Annual Race
St. Patty’s Run Green 8K is March 7

RALEIGH, N.C. (February 26, 2010)— The 2010 St. Patty’s Run Green 8K (www.stpattysrungreen.com), benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Eastern North Carolina Chapter, will include electronic race packets; compostable food and drink containers made from corn-based plastics; recyclable, Tyvek race bibs; and other earth-friendly initiatives.

“We are excited to incorporate additional earth-friendly aspects to this year’s event,” says Bruce Bokish, race coordinator. “By doing so, we will be able to educate people on green practices, keep our environmental footprint low and support a great cause.”

Waste handling stations will be set up throughout the event area. Volunteer Duke University graduate students will watch over the stations to ensure that materials are properly separated into the composting, recycling and landfill garbage containers. Green Planet Catering will provide the composting services for the race.

Bokish is promoting the event with post cards printed on recycled paper, rather than printing a standard race brochure. This will decrease paper production by two-thirds. Bokish estimates that more than 80 percent of race materials and waste will be composted or recycled.

The event will include a green expo with health and fitness organizations, as well as nonprofits discussing their eco-friendly activities. There are still a few spaces available in the expo area. For more on participating, contact Bruce Bokish at 919.349.1719 or msevents@yahoo.com.

The race will take place at Moore Square in downtown Raleigh on Sunday, March 7, and includes a post-race party hosted by Tir na nOg Irish Pub. New this year, is a Pint-sized Micro-Marathon; walk, jog, or run 26.2 yards and then take part in a variety of festivities that include live music and a special food menu. The fee to participate is $30 until March 6. The race day fee is $35. For more race information or to register online, visit www.stpattysrungreen.com or call 919.349.1719.
