The new BOXXSTER® collapsible container system is making contractors recycle and taking a big bite out of the traditional dumpster market. It’s also making it easier than ever for contractors to comply with strict new LEED building requirements.
A welcomed and needed change, the BOXXSTER® container system made a name for itself opening for service in Metro-Detroit MI in January 2009. Inside of three months the company had expanded its container service for Asphalt Shingle Roofing Recycling across lower MI, from Flint to Kalamazoo. This is revolutionary for the Roofing contractors that have long used dumpsters and trailers which debris were taken to a landfill.
The system is unique in that it is collapsible and can be carried in a normal pickup truck, weighing a mere 200lbs. In a system there are 7 individual, 2 cubic yard containers, offering 14 cubic yards of space. When opened they can be placed around jobsites as needed for convenience, versus a stationary dumpster. By having 7 containers, the debris can be segregated on site (i.e. 1 container for plastic, 1 for wood, etc...) saving high processing costs at recycling facilities. The system is shipped from the roofing wholesale company with a shingle order (saving large commercial vehicles an extra trip on the road).
When the project is complete, the contractor/customer calls National Recycling for pickup with a payment via phone or internet. The company sends a truck with a forklift to remove containers from site and transport to a recycling facility.
At the Recycling facility the asphalt shingles are ground and processed into an additive for asphalt pavement, reducing the need for raw materials. The wood is chipped and used for mulch, and plastic is bundled and shipped to appropriate recycling facilities for re-use. “I’ve been getting a lot more jobs because customers love that we are taking a step toward going green and recycling.” Tim Devins, Romeo, MI.
“We were all very surprised at the positive feedback and number of contractors that pledged to use our system on all their projects. We are also very happy with the support from our network of roofing wholesalers who are dedicated with us to promoting shingle recycling.” said Dominic Ulisse, Operations Manager at National Recycling.
National Recycling is currently working to open locations in IN, IL, and OH among others. They will soon be offering services for drywall companies and general contractors looking for jobsite recycling solutions.
