An increase in the number of visitors has been witnessed in the free tourist attractions in the United Kingdom during the global recession. This has been suggested by fresh trade figures.
As a matter of fact, it has been revealed by Alva (The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions)
Significant surge in the number of visitors has been witnessed at free tourist attractions such as the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich and the National Gallery. The first one experienced a 9 per cent increase with 4.78 million visitors and the second spot saw an increase by 15 per cent with 2.37 million visitors.
The reason behind the increase in tourists to the free tourist attractions across the country according to Alva was the people seeking better value days out during the economic recession period.
Although, the British Museum experienced 6.1 per cent less visits in 2009, it still turned out to be the most popular tourist attraction with 5.57 million visitors. Second in the list is the National Gallery and the Tate Modern with 4.75 million visitors.
Nevertheless, the biggest visitor surge was witnessed at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire that charges the customers for entry. The monument saw the biggest visitor increase of 43.6 per cent with 537,120 visitors.
