Flaxseed is a small seed of the flax plant, with amazing health-giving properties. A recent study found that flaxseed may help prevent prostate cancer.
Until he re-discovered the Peruvian Inchi Sacha, flax was the vegetable with the highest content of essential fatty acid Omega 3. Flaxseed has been part of the diet for thousands of years. But not until now that has its 5 minutes of fame as a super food. This is not surprising popularity in recent years, multiple studies have shown that it can be beneficial for a myriad of conditions from constipation to prevent breast and prostate cancer lowering cholesterol and reducing the likelihood of stroke.
A study at Duke University Medical Center showed promising results in intake of flaxseed in treating prostate cancer. The researchers recruited 160 men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer and it should be removed. The men were divided into 4 groups to follow a regimen of flaxseed for 30 days. One group was given 30 grams of ground flaxseed combined with a normal diet, the second group 30 grams combined with a low fat diet, the third group, also 30 grams with normal diet and finally the fourth group was given 30 grams per day of flaxseed with very low fat diet.
After surgery, doctors examined the tumor cells and the results showed that flaxseed dramatically slowed tumor growth up to 30 and 40%, independent of the diet followed in each group.
Dr. Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, Ph.D., who led the study, explained that the high content of essential Omega 3 acid was the reason for the modification of cancer cells. He also noted that lignans present in flaxseed help remove the body's testosterone, which may help suppress cancer cells. Other studies that have aroused the interest of the public have been made in relation to flaxseed and breast cancer, because for the first time a food has proven effective in treating this disease.

The latest study on this effect was published in May this year in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, found that a daily dose of muffins rich in flaxseed (25 grams, equivalent to 2 tablespoons)
Flaxseed is rich in lignans, which are a type of soluble fiber also acts as phytoestrogens. In fact, their estrogenic activity is much higher in relation to soybeans. When flax seed is consumed, the bacteria in the digestive tract converts lignans similar substances to human estrogen, so are particularly beneficial for women because it can help reduce the risk of breast cancer, control cholesterol and menopausal symptoms.
As part of a balanced diet, flaxseed may be an excellent addition to caring for your heart. Its consumption has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease because it promotes the reduction of LDL (bad cholesterol)
Fiber, both soluble and insoluble in flaxseed improves digestive tract health, helping to prevent constipation. It was observed that lignans and alpha-linolenic acid may be beneficial in preventing colon cancer. New studies have found that omega - 3 and therefore flaxseed, can reduce the risk of macular degeneration, which causes vision loss in many populations. Flaxseed has also proved effective in treating dry eyes, as this condition is due to an insufficient concentration of oil in the outer layers of the eye.
