Each day for over four decades now, the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi has been the state’s primary diabetes educator and advocate, steering Mississippians toward a healthier future and inspiring them to take control of their diabetes.
And throughout each of the years past, the Diabetes Foundation has relied on its countless volunteers and supporters to help steady the wheel through the stormy economic climate and light the way for the thousands of Mississippians affected by diabetes.
Among the Foundation’s most loyal supporters are Jeff and Patty Christie, of Ridgeland, who for the past 22 years have donated a Honda Civic for the cause of fighting and defeating diabetes. Raffle tickets are sold for a Honda Civic each year, and every dollar raised stays in Mississippi to provide care and support for Mississippians of all ages affected by diabetes.

“We appreciate and applaud the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi for all of their efforts over the years for helping and supporting so many Mississippi families affected by diabetes,” said Patty Christie, whose husband’s grandmother lived a long life with diabetes. “Their hard work affects many lives in our state, and we’re honored to be a part of it.”
Like the Christies, so many Mississippi families have someone in their family with diabetes, and like the Christies, so many Mississippi families each year assist in the fight against diabetes by volunteering their time and energy to help the Diabetes Foundation educate and empower Mississippians with diabetes.
Joann Walk-Ferguson, of Columbus, a past ‘Car for a Cure’ winner, thought she was doing nothing more than making a donation to the Diabetes Foundation when she purchased her one ticket for the car raffle.
Taking care of herself and helping her husband take care of his diabetes, Walk-Ferguson felt compelled to enter the ‘Car for a Cure’ giveaway, because she believed in raising diabetes awareness and helping people like herself who live with diabetes.
“Until there’s a cure for diabetes, the best prescription is education provided by the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi,”
And after her big win, Walk-Ferguson, too, continues her personal fight against diabetes by promoting diabetes-related educational initiatives.
“Believing that knowledge is power, and that people truly can take control of their diabetes if only they know how, I became involved with the Diabetes Foundation’s efforts with raising diabetes awareness,” she said.
Statistics indicate that in addition to the 350,000 Mississippians with diabetes– both diagnosed and undiagnosed, – there are more than 850,000 others who are at risk for developing the chronic disease.
“We must address the seriousness of diabetes, and that means that we aggressively work to combat the complications of this disease through educational initiatives and empower patients to seek proactive diabetes management,”
“We’re in the business of saving lives,” Fortune said. “And we wouldn’t be there without the support of people like the Christies and so many countless other families and corporations who support our endeavors throughout the year.”
The DFM is the state’s only nonprofit health organization that provides diabetes information, patient services and advocacy, and its mission is to provide hope through programs, services and research to the 346,500 Mississippians with diabetes. Every dollar raised by the DFM stays in the state to support these efforts. In addition, 89 cents of every dollar raised goes toward the organization’
