New Roads make Southern Zone more Accessible

Costa Rica is changing with advancements in everything from 3G technology to roads. The new roads: Caldera Highway and Southern Coastal Highway from Quepoes to Dominical, are making the once remote Southern Zone increasingly more popular.

Feb. 25, 2010 - PRLog -- After 30 years of waiting the country has a new 77 kilometer road connecting the capital San Jose to the Pacific Coast and port of Puntarenas.  The implications for international commercial trade is key to Costa Rica competing for new foreign direct investment into Central America.  The new Caldera Highway was constructed by Autopista del Sol, a Spanish company that built the road at an estimated cost of $238 million dollars in exchange for a 25.5 year concession of toll collections.  The highway now cuts the travel time by over 1 hour to the coast from San Jose.  This means a little over 1 hour to Jaco Beach, which means increased weekend visitors from the city and easier access for those on quick vacations.

Another hour on to Quepos and Manuel Antonio, which are the locations of the coming Pez Vela Marina and one of the most visited national parks in the country.  Beautiful beaches, resorts including the now under construction Wyndham Jade, and with plenty of outdoor activities make this a huge draw to visitors.

And now with the near completion of another road a few decades in the making is the 44 kilometer Coastal Highway from Quepos to Dominical.   Travel time to Dominical from San Jose will now be around 3 hours or less, amazing progress from my first trip here crossing over in some cases wooden bridges on that former bumby road from Quepos.  The area is now being discovered by all kinds of new travelers and there seems to be a lot more people in town these days.

The Southern Zone has numerous attractions and beaches to explore.  The Whale’s Tail in the Uvita National Marine Park is a stretch of sand and rocks that look like a whale’s tail when viewed from the surrounding mountain.  It is possible to walk out on to the Whale’s Tail during low tide and swim on either side or wonder the tidal pools.  There are also beaches with caves, waterfalls with swimming holes, adventure tours from zip lining to white water rafting.  Also Sierpe is close by with boat access to Drake’s Bay and the Corcavado National Park in the Osa Peninisula, which is one of the most bio diverse locations on the planet.

There are other advancements in the areas as well such as new hospital in Cortes, coming golf course in San Buenas, and plans for an International Airport in Palmar Sur.  The Real Estate market has begun to pick up some with all this progression, but the prices in the Southern Zone are still very reasonable and there are still plenty of property deals available including lots for under $40,000 USD.  The Southern Zone is now on the map for worldwide travelers and opportune investors.
