Feb. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- CIG has been informed that the United Nations has confirmed the scheduling of an additional climate change meeting in April in an attempt to revitalize faltering international talks to fight climate change ahead of the crucial talks to be held in Mexico City in November.

The announcement of an additional three day meeting in Bonn, Germany from the 9th to the 11th of April was made by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

CIG has learned that the decision comes after the 11 member Bureau of the Conference of the Parties met recently following a number of behind the scenes consultations with the diplomats involved with last Decembers Copenhagen Climate Summit, which was hoped to achieve a global legally binding climate pact, but which was seen by most as delivering nothing more than a bare minimum agreement.

As result of the high expectations in Copenhagen only  two follow up meetings were scheduled for 2010, a two week summit in early June in Bonn, and the annual Conference of Parties summit in Mexico City starting on 29 November.

Yvo de Boer, executive secretary of the UNFCCC, who has surprisingly announced his resignation from the UN and who is, CIG sources say, scheduled to vacate his position after the second climate meeting in June, said that the UN had moved swiftly to schedule the extra meeting in a bid to restore the momentum to  climate negotiations.

"Following the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, this constitutes a quick return to the negotiations," CIG understands De Boer as having said. "The decision to intensify the negotiating schedule underlines the commitment by governments to move the negotiations forward towards success in Cancun."
