64% Of People Would Dump Someone By Text

Following the recent news that Cheryl Cole has allegedly dumped her husband Ashley by text message, the UK’s leading mobile phone price comparison website conducted research to find out what people’s attitudes are towards “virtual dumping”.

Feb. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- Nearly two thirds of people would dump someone by text message or through Facebook, new research of 1,978 people by www.rightmobilephone.co.uk has shown. The site wanted to look into people’s attitudes towards “virtual dumping” after the recent rumours that Cheryl Cole has dumped her Chelsea player husband by text.

When asked, ‘what would be the most likely reason for you to end a relationship by text or on Facebook?’ the respondents said;

1.    If partner cheated – 45%

2.    Too scared to do it face-to-face – 21%

3.    Lack of respect/didn’t care about the person – 19%

4.    Ashamed to have met someone else – 8%

5.    To avoid confrontation  - 7%

22% of the people who took part in the study said they had already finished with someone by text message or over Facebook. Nearly 1 in 5 of the respondents, 18%, admitted to publicly humiliating a partner or love interest by airing their dirty laundry on a social networking site in the past. Of those who said they would be most likely to dump someone by text if they were cheated on, 41% said they would delete the person’s number afterwards.

Further findings included 31% of the respondents claiming it would be more acceptable to end a relationship over a voicemail than a text message. Rightmobilephone.co.uk also found the most common excuses to end a relationship, when there really was no excuse at all. ‘It’s not you, it’s me” is still a firm favourite, with 56% claiming they would use the expression if they didn’t know what else to say.

17% said they would use the excuse of wanting to be single or ‘needing space’ as a reason to split up and 8% said they would claim they didn’t deserve the other person, giving them reason to end their relationship.

Neil McHugh, co-founder of rightmobilephone.co.uk, said;

“The rumours that Cheryl Cole has finished with her husband Ashley by text spurred us into finding out what people typically thought about the subject. It wasn’t a huge shock that so many said they would dump someone by text and for those who said they would do so if they were cheated on, it’s probably only what they think their partner deserves.”

“I think mobile phones are starting to play a more important role in relationships in today’s society and, just as they can play a key role getting people together, they can also be just as important in ending things.”
