UK Car Accidents – New Cars Offer Restricted Visibility for Drivers

The research by Which? Car, remarked that overall visibility in modern vehicles is poorer than it was in cars built 15 years ago. It is felt that the cause of this is due to the increase in thickness of door pillars and roofs in comparison to older models.

The top three models on the market that have been given a positive review regarding visibility are currently the Smart FourTwo Coupe, the Citroen C3 Picasso and the Fiat 500. It is no secret that these are effective family-geared cars as opposed to the vehicles that offer the worst visibility according to the report. Sports cars, Porsche Boxster and the BMW Z4 were rated the poorest according to the report.

Editor of Which? Car, Richard Headland, said of the findings: "This of particular concern for more vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists."

In reality however, restricted visibility for vehicles has so far not been a significant cause of accidents on UK roads. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents claims that poor visibility is blamed for 1% of all road traffic accidents. Needless to say, ironing out that 1% would save up to 25 drivers and passengers from fatal accidents every year.
