Feb. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- While this can be a very effective way to brighten your smile, there are some things you should know so that you don't over-do it and cause permanent damage to your teeth.

Renata Nyleve Editor of the "Best teeth Whitening Products" website -- http://www.BestTeethWhiteningProducts.info -- pointed out;

Hydrogen peroxide as a tooth whitener

“…Most whitening kits that you will find today use hydrogen peroxide as a tooth whitener and it is very effective, often offering the user a bright, healthy white smile. Did you know that many toothpastes that are whitening also use hydrogen peroxide to help you maintain your healthy smile? You might also be interested to find that many pre or post brush whitening rinses also use a diluted form of hydrogen peroxide…”

All of this hydrogen peroxide has to be doing something right? Sure, as a result, many people are walking around with beautiful white smiles, but at what cost?

Side Effects

While all these products offer great white grins, you might be surprised to find that there are also side effects when used for too long or at too high of concentrations. For instance, many people have reported discoloration of the gums and tongue after using hydrogen peroxide rinses for too long and if you whiten your teeth too frequently, even with a kit, you might find that you wind up with severely sensitive teeth. Other side effects that have been reported are a peeling mouth and damage to the enamel on the teeth.

So, how long is too long for these common teeth whitening products? For a whitening rinse, the longest you should use it is for about six months. Then you should consider switching to a product that doesn't use hydrogen peroxide for at least a year.

With whitening toothpastes that contain hydrogen peroxide, consider only using them for about two years consecutively before switching to another type of toothpaste for at least a year.

Tooth whitening kits should only be used once every one to two years and only one kit should be used.

“…All in all, when used properly, hydrogen peroxide as a teeth whitener can be very effective and safe for short term use, but you should consider how much you're using and for how long you'll be using it for before you decide on long term use. In the end, your safest bet for whitening your teeth without causing damage is to choose a whitening kit that you only use for a short time…” added R. Nyleve.
