Jay Bridgland
Wins 2010 NICHE Award
Philadelphia, Pa - Artist Jay Bridgland, of Bridgland Studios based in Oakland CA was awarded the prestigious 2010 NICHE Award for his glass necklace entitled "Modern Tribal" in the category of Jewelry: Sculpture to Wear (concept jewelry).
This award recognizes Jays vision of contemporary artglass and concept of glass artwear. The necklace was made using an exciting form of glassblowing known as flameworking. This is an intimate process of shaping and blowing molten glass in a torch using traditional tools and techniques. This artform enables Jay to explore the limitless possibilities of expressing fashion through glass. In addition to owning Bridgland Studios, a glass art studio, Jay also teaches and heads the Glass Flameworking Department at The Crucible School of Fire Arts in Oakland, CA.
Winners of the 2010 Niche Awards were announced at a ceremony held in conjunction with the Buyers Market of American Craft on Friday February 12, 2010. The award ceremony recognized 36 finalists from over 1000 submissions in the professional categories including ceramics, wood, metal, jewelry and glass.
The NICHE Awards program is sponsored by NICHE magazine, the exclusive trade publication for North American retailers of American craft. The awards program began in 1990 to recognize the outstanding creative achievements of American craft artists who produce work for craft galleries and retail stores. Judging is based on three main criteria:
. Technical excellence, both in surface design and form
. Market viability
